Country singer Riley Green made his television debut on Monday, performing the Nineties-indebted single “There Was This Girl” [co-written by Erik Dylan] during the fourth hour of NBC’s Today.
Penned by Green with Erik Dylan, “There Was This Girl” appears on the Alabama native’s 2018 EP In a Truck Right Now, released in June 2018 by Big Machine Records. The lyrics depict a guy who falls hard and makes mistakes or rash decisions when a pretty woman catches his eye — until he finally makes a good decision and asks her to marry him. Green and his band crank up for their performance on Today, mixing hard-twanging electric guitar riffs with his soulful baritone to find some common ground between the arena-ready sounds of Bon Jovi and Brooks & Dunn.
On Tuesday night, Green will be back in Nashville to become a member of the inaugural Grand Ole Opry NextStage program with a special event at Ole Red downtown. He joins the new artist initiative alongside Tenille Townes, Tegan Marie and Travis Denning. Green also has a handful of shows coming up later in January, including a January 25th date in Springfield, Illinois, supporting Justin Moore.
