Spanish Guitar Sensation, Latin GRAMMY-winning Twanguero To Digitally Release New CD 'Backroads Vol. 2'

Named “The King of Spanish Twang” by Guitar Player magazine, Latin Grammy-winning guitar sensation, Twanguero, (Diego Garcia), will release his newest cd, the highly anticipated BACKROADS, VOL.2, (Carreteras Secundarias, Vol. 2), on Friday, April 1st. A long-awaited sequel to the award-winning BACKROADS VOL.1, (Carreteras Secundarias, Vol. 1), the digital release (Cosmica Records) represents the completion of a five-year, two volume, musical journey that took him from North and South America to Mexico and the jungles of Costa Rica. Rolling Stone calls Twanguero “a journey into the heart of the music,” and indeed BACKROADS, VOL. 2, is exactly that. A stunning, solo sequel to the award-winning BACKROADS, Vol. 1, (“Best World Music Album” at the 2018 MIN awards,) volume 2 continues Twanguero’s journey of musical exploration of the blues and ragtime of north America to the rhythms of south America and Mexico and the jungles of Costa Rica, where the album was entirely composed during the Covid lockdown. A documentary crew followed him throughout his time in Costa Rica to record the entire process of making the cd in the jungle and illustrate the experience.

While BACKROADS Vol. 1, explored the contrasting regional guitar rhythms of north and south America and Mexico, BACKROADS, Vol.2 takes the listener on a captivating musical trip into the heart of the lush jungle, beautifully revealing Twanguero’s deeper journey into self-discovery and the mystical experience of nature. Each track represents a different animal. Inspired by the birds, howler monkeys, jaguars, cicadas, and other animals, Twanguero’s passionate music and playing brings the feeling of the tropical environment to life. “I wanted to capture and express the symphony of the jungle,” states Twanguero.

Renowned for his fingerpicking technique, incredible versatility and distinctive ‘twang’ sound, his music is an unusual fusion of classical Spanish guitar, flamenco, Latin rhythms, country, rockabilly, jazz…and surf music. With eight previous albums to his credit, this latest cd is perhaps his most complex yet, revealing the depth and virtuosity of his artistry.      

The 9-song BACKROADS, VOL.2 opens with the tender, lyrically played Spanish piece “La Leyenda del Cañaveral” where Twanguero’s mastery of classic Spanish guitar picking can clearly be heard. His technique is also evident as the music segues into the more driving Brazilian flavored “Samba de la Jungla,” where the indigenous sounds of the jungle come alive with his classic Latin rhythms.

Twanguero’s rare command of technique can also be felt with the thumping, cat-like counter-rhythms of “Jaguar,” which evoke visions of big cats prancing in the jungle. Going deeper into the forest, we feel the cool sounds of a waterfall echoing over the rocks in the melodic “Iguazu,” with the gentle plucking of guitar strings and a subtle chorus chanting repeatedly in the background. Then there is another shift with the soulful groove of “Blues Del Cafatel,” in which we hear the restrained, delicate influence of country music previously explored in volume1.

With the completion and release of BACKROADS, Vol.2, Garcia has come full circle, taking listeners on a musical journey like no other. Using his guitar as “a little orchestra,” he has successfully created a musical bridge between the two worlds of contemporary North American electrified guitar and the very traditional Spanish/European melodic style, melding them together in his own distinct way--the “Twanguero” way.
