James Blake has released "I Had a Dream She Took My Hand," the second single from his eagerly anticipated seventh studio album Trying Times, due March 13 via his own imprint Good Boy Records. The song features a sample of "It Was Only a Dream" — a 2019 track by East Los Angeles band Thee Sinseers, written and produced by peermusic songwriter Joseph Quiñones.

Trying Times is James Blake's seventh studio album and his first as a fully independent artist, released two years after his departure from Republic Records. A singular and important artistic statement, the record was written between Los Angeles and London and is described as moving "along the pressure lines of modern life, where overwhelm becomes both subject and atmosphere." It explores the tension between intimacy and isolation, the fragility of love against a backdrop of global anxiety, and the disorienting loop of hope and dread that defines contemporary life.

The 13-track album features guest appearances from UK rapper Dave — with whom Blake previously collaborated on Dave's acclaimed project The Boy Who Played The Harp — and Los Angeles singer Monica Martin, a recurring Blake collaborator known for their work together on "Show Me" and "Go Easy, Kid." The lead single "Death of Love," which features the London Welsh Male Voice Choir and samples Leonard Cohen's "You Want It Darker," was released in January to significant critical attention.

The full Trying Times tracklist is as follows:

  1. Walk Out Music
  2. Death of Love
  3. I Had a Dream She Took My Hand
  4. Trying Times
  5. Make Something Up
  6. Didn't Come to Argue (ft. Monica Martin)

Blake has also announced a North American tour in support of the album, with dates running from May 27 through June 12, including two nights at Brooklyn Paramount in New York City and stops in Atlanta, Boston, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Toronto, Chicago, and two nights at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.
