GRAMMY-nominated multidisciplinary artist Lido Pimienta has announced Caribenya, a new album out July 17 that serves as a spiritual successor to her landmark Miss Colombia. The lead single "Tóxica"—a diatribe against bad friendship set to fiery cumbia—is out now alongside a visually striking video featuring Blair Witch Project-esque forest footage, men made of grass, and cameos from Pimienta's own children.
The album's title is a playful portmanteau of "Caribe" and "Enya," a nod to the Irish singer whose music Pimienta listens to while writing. Caribenya synthesizes the lessons of last year's orchestral album La Belleza into a truly human, global work firmly rooted in Latin American and Caribbean anti-colonial concerns. "Someone told me that making a classical album was gonna be impossible for me and I did it," Pimienta says. "Caribenya is the counterpart where I got to be less cerebral and have more fun. It has a sense of joy and collaboration that is very Caribbean." The album relies on joyous resistance—on the moments of escape on dancefloors, beaches, and living rooms as the world burns—while never losing sight of greater issues at hand. La Belleza and Caribenya will be released together as a double LP on gold vinyl.
Pimienta will support the album with a North American tour beginning July 9 in Burlington, ON and including stops in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Watch the video for "Tóxica" at youtube.com and pre-order Caribenya now.
